I am hoping someone can point me in the correct direction. In EN 1998-1, for vertical pressure vessels. are the shear forces determined per Section 3.2.2 "Basic Representation of the Seismic Action" or Section 4.3.5 "Non Structural Elements?" If it is Section 4.3.5, how is the fundan1ental vibration period of the building in the relevant direction (T1) determined for a vessel mounted on a skid base on a concrete pad?

Thank you.

Section 4.3.5 is for non-structural elements ( appendages of buildings e.g. parapets, antennae, mechanical appendages and equipment,....) .. If the subject vessel supported on a structure ( say , at a certain storey of the bldg structure ) , section 4.3.5 is applicable..

If the pressure vessel is self standing , you should follow 3.2.2.2 thru 3.2.2.5 and 3.2.3..

I have German version of EN Unfired pressure vessels —Part 3: Design

Clause 16.14.9 ( Wind- und Erdbebenlasten)
....Diese Verfahren können auch auf Erdbebenlasten angewandt werden, wenn festgelegt wird, dass derartige Lasten
als äquivalente statische Lasten behandelt werden können

( ..earthquake loads where it is decided , may be treated as equivalent static loads .)

I will suggest you to look EN 1998-4 ( Part 4: Silos, tanks and pipelines ) and you may provide more info. regarding the vessel, region to get better responds..
