I have a beam made from a square box section with drainage holes in the bottom flange. With bending of the beam we have compressve stresses in the bottom flange. What kind of SCF do I have to calculate around these holes. I have looked through my Peterson, but can find no mention of SCF for Compressive stresses. Appreciate any feedback from you experienced structural guys

SCF for compressive stresses

Good morning izax1,
I'm thinking there won't be one for compression. Generally the stress concentration is looking for a condition where failure would initiate from a crack, not yielding. You won't get that sort of failure in compression with steel. But if you have a condition where the load can reverse then you could have something to consider. I don't have reference to share but some one with a better understanding of fracture mechanics (maybe a materials guy?) can point you in the right direction.
