I am in the situation where our supplier is short on SAE J429 grade 5. Looking to see if SAE J249 grade 8 will comply with ASME B31.3 process piping. Flange connections are 4, 6 & 8".

Any help, reference or link will be appreciated,

Thanks

You should be specifying ASTM A193 B8 stainless steel fasteners for B31 piping. Preferably B8 class 2.

Is it stated in ASME B31.3 anywhere. I just need to confirm.

Thanks

Have you looked in B31.3? If you don't have a copy, how can you confirm what I -- or anyone else -- tells you?

I did some searches in B31.3 for SAE J429, then just J429, ... Nope, that material is not found.

I can't necessarily confirm tothepoint's recommendation (B31.3 says ASTM 193 is for High Temperature or High Pressure Service and Other Special Purpose Applications) and I don't know enough about your application to make a recommendation.

But circling back to my first point -- you're the engineer. If the part fails, what are you going to tell your management, your customer, the judge (if there's a lawsuit) -- somebody on the Internet told me it was ok?
