running a 2 HP 50 HZ motor on 60 HZ

1. can a 50 hz electric AC motor (capacitor start)
be run an a 60 hz circuit ?

2. why do they make 50 HZ motors when the standard is 60 HZ ?

1. Probably not. This has been discussed many times, a search of this forum should provide much information.

2. Try telling the bulk of the world that runs at 50Hz that 60Hz is the standard.
 
Yes, it will run but 20% faster.
Is it going to be operated on the same voltage?
It may have trouble accelerating.

You may need to change the capacitor. I think possibly 144% subject to other opinions. The applied voltage should be about 20% higher than the original rated voltage of the motor.

Maybe have to change the speed switch as well as the capacitor. By that point it would probably have been easier to buy the right motor in the first place.
