I'm not a communications guy, but I use Simply Modbus software( and a ULinx RS-485 to USB converter from B&B Electronics. It is enough to confirm all your devices are communicating and lets you poll registers as needed.

Hi slavag,

Here's one:
There are a few more available if you google "rs485 tester." I'm not personally familiar with any of them, but I can vouch for B&B Electronics. Of course, if I remember correctly, you're not in the US...

Good on ya,

We recently purchased an RS232 and an RS485 tester from these people: IfTools. It works really well, its a hardware based solution that you can wire into the RS485 line and analyse the data, from either direction.

We picked up an awkward comms issue with timing of devices talking to a 25 year old RTU platform, that had been eluding us for a while. The alternative was an oscilloscope and a lot of mucking around.

Modscan32 is a decent utility if all you want to do is poll Modbus registers. It also has scripting capabilities so you can send multiple requests.
