In writing a specification regarding roller chain, I intend to include a statement that chain shall conform to ANSI/ASME B291. Is ANSI/ASME B29.1M simply a metric conversion of B29.1, and therefore the same thing?

The "M" standards designate SI units. I believe the new ANSI standards and updates require both US and SI units and will have the dual designation.
