Hello. [smile] Can anyone recommend a good reference to design rock bolts to support locally weak spots in rocks slopes?

I have calculated the factors of safety of the rock slopes using Rocscience Slide, which indicate Factors of Safety > 1.5. However,in cases where local weak spots are encountered during the actual excavations, I need to know how to calculate the required length, diameter and spacing of rock bolts to support the locally weak spot/s in the slope face.

Thank you very much.

Hi crcivil. Nope, I havent't checked with any contractor specializing on rock bolts. Thanks for the idea. :)

Google "Hong Kong GeoGuide 7" - it is about anchors. FHWA also has manuals on anchorages and inspection. T H Hanna has written several papers and such on anchorages (see Ch 19 in "Engineering in Rock Masses" edited by F. G. Bell, Butterworth-Heinemann, 1992)) See also Ch12 on Stabilization of Rock Slopes by Wyllie and Mah,"Rock Slope Engineering, Civil and Mining, 4th Ed. (Spon Press).

Thank you BigH. I have downloaded a PDF version of the Wylie and Mah book - it's a good reference. PEinc, I think I could make good use of the "Professional Users Handbook for Rock Bolting" book. Could you refer me to a website where I could download a PDF copy of the book? Thank you. :)

Sorry I just cant let this one go. "I havent't checked with any contractor specializing on rock bolts" Doesn't show an awefull lot of initiative does it ??

"I think I could make good use of the "Professional Users Handbook for Rock Bolting" book. Could you refer me to a website where I could download a PDF copy of the book?" What makes you think anything and everything is available for download from the internet?. The Poster told you who published the book, gave you the ISBN # as well as the authors name. What else do you need??

Just using Google it is probably a slam dunk to find it. If posts like this are allowed to exist unchallenged, soon we will be asked for help on how to use search engines.
