Hey all,

Is there anyway to set up a design rule for beams that limits deflection to L/360, L/480 etc. so when using suggested shapes it doesn't just apply a member that passes for strength? I am using RISA 5.0.

Thanks!

FYI: There is a RISA forum that would probably be a better place to post such a program specific question.

RISA-3D does not have a "code check" for deflection that limits the deflection ratio for the beam. The deflection ratio is reported to the user (in the Member Deflections) spreadsheet. But, this is never compared to an "allowable" deflection level.

This can, however, easily be done in the RISAFloor program which has some pretty advanced features for the design / optimization of beams for deflection.

RAM Structural System is set up to include deflection criteria when it selects beam sizes. It is a simple thing to change the default criteria for an individual beam such as a spandrel beam that carries brick.

God forbid - you will have to use a calculator for that!! Sorry

Gee Mike it is Friday. No reason to be condescending. I have a large project in very preliminary stages and was asked by my superior to come up with a rough framing layout. I was also asked to optimize the structure as much as possible in 4 short hours. So because there were roughly 300 floor members of varying size (mostly controlled by deflection), I thought it would be nice to have a feature which would allow me to design for a deflection limit. Thanks for the words of wisdom though and hopefully your day gets better!

Didn't mean to be condescending and didn't realize you had 300+ members. It is Friday and I was just being a smart #ss.

April Fools!!
