Required embedment for a timber pile into a concrete pile cap.

I am trying to find a detail for timber piles into a concrete pile cap. I searched our company library, the Timber Piling Council, and checked Google and could not come up with a detail with confidence.

Basically we have 12" timber piles with a concrete pile cap on grade supporting a shallow water tank. There is no uplift and very little shear in the cap. Does anyone know a reference for the connection of the piles to the cap?

Is this detail as simple as saying embed the pile 6"
Or is there an obscure code requirement that we need to run rebar thru the top?

If there is no uplift and negligible shear then technically you wouldn't need more than that kind of embedment. But in all honesty is it that hard to drill a hole through the top of the pile and stick a piece of rebar through? The piece of mind would be worth it on its own.
 
6” is the standard most places I’ve worked (it’s also in the CRIS handbook). Of course, a factor in that would be the force transfer you were trying to do…..if those forces were very low/almost nonexistent than you would fall back on the 6”.

The PADOT min. embedment is 1'-0" unless it is a single row of piles in which case it is 1'-6". Probably because I have been using that standard for over 30 years that 6" seems skimpy.

I have expanded my google searching and have come up with a few references that are right in line with what has been said

6" - Design of Marine Facilities for the Berthing, Mooring, and Repair of Vessels
4" embedment minimum for piles not in tension - ASCE/SEI 24-98 Flood resistant design and construction -
12"-24" depending on the situation - Ohio DOT:
6" - CRSI
