What are generally good replacements for threading for adjusting a seat ring on a tube? I need to fix a ring on a tube, and be able to adjust its height.

Any questions, just post below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

I suppose the ring could ride on an internal keyway thus giving a guy axial displacement. Locking it down could be accomplished by clamping down on the tube itself with a set screw. I've used three screws at 120 degrees in the past.

You don't want too much play, I would keep the tolerances in the ring between 0.002 and 0.005 inches. That way there is not too much slop in the adjustments.

I don't know how accurately you need to position the ring, but if the ring is short compared to the tube diameter and is a loose fit, an eccentric load (eg a weight on a cantilevered arm) will cause the ring to cock and jam. Look at the trigger mechanism on most caulking guns. If you know the coefficient of friction, this can be calculated accurately and guarantee secure locking.

In addition to Arto's post, Fenner and others make the taperlock range of locking sleeves.
