Replace family table Instances

Ihave an assembly witha patterned family table instance. I have other parts that reference these instances (MATE,ALIGN, etc). I want to replace the instances with another, but I lose all pattern info resulting in losing references for its children. I have never had any problems with replacingnon-patterned instances. Is there any way around this?
