Hi,

I am working on a renovation project at a mall. The structure is a steel frame with 20'x20' bays.

We have demolished a floor in one bay to construct a new entry stair to the mall. The foundation is a raft. The bottom of the stair will extend beyond the existing raft. My initial comments to the client were that I would support the stair independent from the existing superstructure. The idea is that we would extend the raft to pick up the end of the stair and build up from the raft. My thought process behind this was it seems cleaner and although it is a raft, I felt it would be good to spread the load on the raft as much as possible by using load bearing walls instead of columns.

I have recently been thinking why not support the top of the stair on the existing steel beams to save on a few walls.

The building is about 15years old and because of the raft, I am not overly concerned about differential settlement. Is there any preference between the options. Any thing I may be missing?

Thanks

Check the strength and stiffness of the existing beams to support the stair loading.
