Removing Toyota 5sp Transmission

Hello,
I have to replace the clutch on my '93 Toyota 5sp, 4cyl, 2wd basic truck. I can't figure out how to get to the two top bolts on the tranny. Do I have to tip the engine back and down, or am I overlooking something else? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance.

Chuck (CA)

Were not mechanics, we are engineers.
Not all engineers know how to work on cars.
There are many branches of mechanical engineering that have nothing to do with cars.
Call the dealership.

ecampos from evelrod---- That's a bit unkind. Some of us are darn good mechanics and poor engineers. Non the less "I are one". (But it's true, I do know an mech. engineer who is not at all mechanical, unfortunatly).

You are right Evelrod, I was harsh, but this is a forum about "powertrain engineering" not "How to fix my car".

Mr. Campos, you are absolutely correct. This a forum for engineers, by engineers (and other interested parties).
Perhaps this thread was posted in the wrong forum, but , be that as it may, He may well BE and engineer in need of an answer to the problem (one engineer "SCOOTER" has already been turned away from these forums).
Why not try to be a little more charitable with some of these questions (belive me, I've been asked some preeeeety stupid questions by engineers on the last 40 years). I don't mean to upset anyone, I just don't want to see potentially good people turned away. In diversity is streangth. Besides, I might have a stupid question to ask one of these days .

Chuck, i had the same problem with the two top tranny bolts when swappping motors in my 4x4, after laying under my truck with an impact wrench for 30 minutes i took a 14 mm boxed end wrench and cut off the open end of the wrench(this allowed me to put a pipe on it) and go at it from the top. In order to do this you have to take the hood off but i already had it off because i was swapping motors.

those bolts are tight and thats the only way i was able to get them off, but they came right out this way.

hope this helps..

I'll keep it short. Sometimes you can use a specially designed wrench that resembles the letter "C", with a different size on each end. They are available on both fractional and metric. Check with Sears (Craftman), or your local auto parts store for these wrenches.

Chuck,
I had to unbolt the tailpipe hangers and let the engine tilt back. Then I used a large, ratcheting torque wrench through the shift lever hole in the floorboard. It took about a foot and a half of extensions but it worked. Have fun.

you may have to tilt the engine back but usuually you dont have to just an open end wrench will work.
