Is anyone out there using HP Remote Graphics software?

Our company is spreading out pretty quickly - we currently run PDMWorks but it doesn't run terribly well over a WAN so we are looking at some PDM packages that can handle multiple sites to replace it. The thought is that rather than having all the data in distributed locations and having people access it locally, we could do the opposite and have all the data in a central location and let people access it remotely, using remote graphics software.

I would love to hear any experiences anyone's had with this type of set up...

We do have Advanced server, and now with the Check-in call we could potentially create our own client (yikes) that would check docs in to all vault locations simultaneously, end result being multiple vaults that all look exactly the same. You would also have to use the API to take ownership, as you wouldn't want ownership taken in one vault and not the others.

Not the ideal solution since this isn't what PDMWorks is designed to do. Plus you end up with a huge vault in each place, which PDMWorks struggles with.

We tried to use Terminal Server with SMARTEAM and it was a total failure. Trying to push the graphical information associated with vaulting operations and doing model changes via TS was extremely slow. We also tried to use Citrix as well and that was just as bad. Vault replication seems to be the best answer. I'm not sure why you'd want to use a remote tool to do vaulting operations when you still need to get to the files on the remote server/system to change them. SMARTEAM has a module called Multi-site, but you will pay for this kind of functionality. It's kind of all or nothing in my opinion.

engAlright is on the right track I think if you're going to stick with PDMWorks.

Thanks Kevin - doesn't sound like the remote graphics options are up to the job of handling Solidworks stuff yet!

Results of initial tests of the HP remote graphics solution - seems extremely chunky during zoom/pan/rotate, even when the host and client were connected to the same 100 MBps switch. While watching both at the same time, you could see the action happen on the host with almost no lag after the command is sent, but then you have to wait 1-2 seconds before that action appears on the client display. Doesn't seem like much, but it can be a REAL P.I.T.A. when you are used to a 0 second lag.
