Reload a component (similar to "update" from Intralink/Windchill)?

Before we enter our database at our company, it's common for a couple folks to be collaborating on some assembly for some amount of time. In Intralink and Windchill you could "update" a component and it would go and retrieve the latest version of that component from the database and replace the component in your assembly with the latest one.

Now if you're working without a PDM system like that, there's no slick way to update a part like that (that I know of). What I've done is:

  • suppress that component in the assembly
  • open that component and erase current
  • open the component from the shared network drive
  • resume that component and whatever else went with it
Is there something better than that? It seems cumbersome.
