Relation between welding profile and welding cost ( QTY of metal deposit of filler metal )

Dear welding expert.

when it comes to welding of oil & gas pipeline.
to what extend we have a freedom in selection the welding profile?
what is the relation between bevel profile (altering V shape bevel to J shape bevel profile ) and money, time saving due to reduce ot increase the filler metal QTY.
