I am doing quantities for a structure. I was wondering what is the maximum length of reinforcement before splicing bars together. I thought the maximum length was 60'-0". Any help would be helpfully. Thanks!
willijamie,
Maximum length for bars larger than #5 60'. #4 bars are to flexible at 60' and normally are 40' long. Depending on the state and manufacturer #5 bars can be 40 or 60 feet long.
Check with the owner/DOT as well. In California, we always used 60ft - for all bar sizes. In the Northeast, some of the DOTs specify a 30 ft max. length (unless you have a 40 ft (or so) bridge deck. Then they'll go full-width to eliminate the splice).
Also, epoxy coated bars are more limited due to potential failure of the coating while handling and transporting. So the #5 at 60' is usually limited to 20' less.
