I have a freestanding reinforced concrete elevator tower with brick veneer, approximately 36’ tall. It is tied back to the building by an elevated exterior concrete walkway slab on one side at the midspan of the wall. I was going to design this shaft as self supporting, treating each wall as shear wall. I want to transfer the out of plane load (wind and seismic) horizontally into the shear walls. I will make sure the footing can resist the overturning load but would think the self weight of the shaft will be enough to withstand it. Am I on the right track? Any suggestions comments?
