Hello everyone.

I have some VRF heat pumps in a boiler room that contains R-410a. From my understanding of ASHRAE 15, I am ok if the boilers are direct vented. Otherwise I will need a refrigerant monitor to interlock with the boilers to prevent the open flame creating phosphene gas from burning leaked refrigerant.

I also have other smaller gas equipment in the room such as gas unit heaters and a duct furnace. Do all these other pieces of equipment also need to be direct vented or is there some kind of code exception?

In 2023, I don't understand why you would not use sealed combustion on all devices regardless of refrigerants. What makes you think a furnace is different from a boiler when it comes to the flame and refrigerant?

Depending on the amount of refrigerant, you may need to install refrigerant monitoring and ventilation.
