Greetings to all;
I am looking for recommendations on books that deal with "older" construction methods. At my work I am frequently finding myself placed on projects that involve the renovation of existing structures and I would like to start building a reference library. I have a few books on placing concrete (circa 1960) and a 5th edition AISC manual. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

SlideRuleEra,

Recently I came upon 'Reinforced Concrete Design Handbook' of the ACI, first edition, ACI 318, appears to be from 38, or 39 ?... oddly enough there is no date in the front.
Interested can scan for you?

Best find of the day though was "Theory of Structures", A. Morley, 1912, 1st ed.

I would love to get a hold of anything by Milos Ketchum.

connect2 - That ACI-318 handbook sounds like a good candidate - it looks to be out-of-print. The document may be from 1941, per this history profile on the ACI website:
If you will send an email to the address on my website I'll be happy to share the tips that I have learned (by trial & error) over the past 4 years on how to get good, readable scans.

Milo Ketchum really did make a lot of contributions to engineering. One good thing is that he published many of his books before 1923. Anything published in the USA before that year is in the public domain - absolutely no copyright issues. Google Books has scanned many and offers the entire book (.pdf format) for free download. Here is a link to seven:

Slide Rule Era:

The copy I have is the 1939 'Design Handbook', there is no reference to ACI 318 in the tile. That being said, Yes I'll email you re scanning, etc. The hand book is in great condition so I'd like to do this once. You have provided much info that I have had use for, so I'll scan it and send it forward to be included.

The Ketchum referal is a gem. Thank-you.

CCB1:

I have the same interest as yours in older construction and have learned alot from older books.

I agree about Milo Ketchum's contribution. Also books by Hool and Johnson or Hool and Kinney. There have been many great engineers which have preceeded us and at a minimum we should try to learn from their great contributions.

I don't have my early books here at work but I will dig up the titles when I go home.

I have an early concrete design book which has been invaluable over the years. There is even a short paragraph about ultimate strength design! Also two way, 3 way and 4 way slabs plus the SMI system.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it.

This may not be all that old, I think it was published in the mid 1960, but its one of my favourite books on structures.

Timoshenko and Young "Theory of Structures"
Also Brezler, Lin, Scalzi "Design of Steel structures"

I think there classical texts in structural engineering.
