hello everyone,

Firstly: I dont really have any musical/audio engineering background, just a interest, so please consider this when reading my post.

Im after some expert advice when it comes to recording sound particular noise -

Im currently working on a project where we want to 'translate' environmental noises into patterns and in the end possibly acoustic panels and environments. its a long story but we are hoping to do this using a scripting language that generates, from sound, sculptural acoustic and environmental panels/tiles.

The reason why im postng this is because we need to record these sounds on the spot and for example focus on a certain frequency or sound wave at a given time-frame, and to take this back to the computer. one example would be to record a noisy urban area, a playground, where we would like to absorb or scatter some of the higher frequencies/or noise produced in the environment. our general idea is to sample the noise from a number of locations around the site to get a full map one could say...

So, we have started to develop the scripting that could possibly translate the audio, but we do not know what would be the best device to use for recording the noises? also, we are looking for a software to process the recorded material, and i guess focus, and save the actual noise pattern which will be used later... any recomendations?

Hope all this makes sense - let me know if it doesnt-

there are loads of voice recorders out there, but we dont know if this would perform well enough? what do we need to consider?

Best regards,
Carl
