RECIRCULATING PUMP SELECTION IN PLAN 53B 1

Dear Sirs,
i would ask your help.
I have been required to quote for a make up system API plan 53B.
How can i dimension the recirculating pump's flowrate according to centrifugal pump's performances?

Plan 53B make up pump is there to top up the accumulator. Normally a little piston pump like a Haskel air driven pump is used or a gear pump. The pre-charge pressure of the accumulator is approx 100Kpa above the chamber pressure and then you size the accumulator based on Working Volume and Safety Volume together with top up frequency. Accumulator size affects the operating Pressure.
When you say regular seal pot you mean Plan 53A I presume? This is a different pump as it is required to circulate through the seal and vessel, depending on arrangement/design. You need to get the system resistance curve and plot against the pump curve. I think that is what you are asking.

Dear Flexibox,

many thanks for your reply.I understand that there is no connection between centrifugal pump's flowrate and recirculating pump's flowrate.
In my case they want also to have a reservoir and then pump and accumulator. Therefore if there is no big leakage through the seals the pump is just needed to recharge the accumulator when the pressure drops down.
Am i correct?

Yes you are referring to API Plan 53B. The make up pump is used to top up the accumulator, normally there is a low pressure alarm to alert the operator to go and top up the accumulator.
