I want to chemically remove chlorine from a brine solution by using NaOH and NaHS.

Typical reactions used in industry are:

2NaOH + Cl2 = NaCl + NaOCl + H2O
and
Na2SO3 + NaOCl = Na2SO4 + NaCl

but if I substitute NaHS for Na2SO3 what is the reaction and what are the reaction products?

Thanks!

There is a possible reaction from NaHS and NaOH in water wich is:

NaHS + NaOH + 2H2O = Na2SO3 + 2H2

In that case hydrogen is form and your vessel should be able to evacuate the non-condensable gas.

From that reaction Na2SO3 could be form and your second pricipale reaction take place (Na2SO3 with NaCL) from the secondary reaction.

If there is a subtitution for NaHS to Na2SO3 then a secondary reaction is eliminate and no hyrdogen will be form.

Then an economical study should be made to identify if the used of Na2SO3 is less costly than using NaHS.
