Suppose architectural limitations exist that don´t allow columns to have more width than 12in. but they need much more area than 12x30in. (12/0.4=30), say 12x48in.
ACI318 commentary limitation for seismic columns shape ratio to 0.4 minimum refers only to "previous practice"
Can they be used if treated as walls? What are the practical consequences of this? Thanks for your advice.

In my view you can put them and instead of analyzing like just walls you make the (if you want, additional) consideration of that they are so wide as to be considered some kind of shearwalls.

I mean, structural designers need not to be prevented from using feasible solutions to the problems they face, and shearwalls carrying axial force are a common sight and even useful tool to set properly some buildings, hence restricting their use without any technical basis would be simply arbitrary and unjustified.
