Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers 4

There have been many questions posted over recent years about how to design bollards, traffic barriers, guardrails, etc. for vehicular impact forces.

The September 2010 issue of Structure Magazine ( has an article entitled "A Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers" that some of you might find interesting.

I cannot reproduce the author's results in the bollard example on p.24 of the article.

kb=3EI/L^3=1581 kip/in or 1.90x10^7 lb/ft (not 10^6 lb/in?)

Fully plastic force = FyZ/18" = 66.0 kip (not 56.7 kip ?)

Where/how does one get the 6.8" deflection?
