Hope this isn't too bizarre a question, but is there an "official" definition for an external surface of a machined part? ANSI, ASME etc... I want to avoid a dispute with a potential client.
According to my knowledge, you will not find such a definition because it is in contradiction with the design sense of the internal and external surfaces. In my opinion, in machining you should define the radius of curvature with respect to the axis of rotation (in turning, for example) as viewed from the toll prospective, however. If this radius is zero or negative – you have an external surface. Otherwise – internal. In my humble opinion, this is the only correct definition in terms of assigning the parameters of the cutting tool geometry and applying the concepts of cutting mechanics.
