Design of a current project requires connecting into an existing 54-inch "concrete pressure pipe" that's called out as such on the 1964 record drawings. It seems this callout isn't very specific; is it concrete cylinger pipe, reinforced concrete pipe, or....

Are there any clues to look for, short of digging it up and cutting into it, to determine exactly what type of pipe this is? Was the pipe manufactured in the '60s the same as that made today? Would like to know what we're cutting into for detailing the connection. Also, any insights on the best methods for connecting to it with either welded steel or new concrete pipe would be appreciated. Thanks all.

If this is "prestressed concrete cylinder pipe", it was perhaps produced to AWWA C301-58 (you might still get hold of a copy of this old standard somewhere). Do you know what the pressure rating or who the manufacturer was (these might supply some clues)? If prestressed (and not something like C300 cylinder or "non-cylinder pipe) I suspect this is likely SP-12 (embedded cylinder) pipe. Some pipe of that era was similar to current, but had heftier and lower strength wires and cylinders than some later pipes. In any case I suspect you are likely going to need an adapter to some sort of "Carnegie-joint/gasketed" pipe end.

We have a lot of concrete pipe in our system from the early 60's, mostly SP-5 and SP-23. Hanson Pipe and Precast ( previously Price Brothers) fabricates adapter pieces so that we can transition from the concrete pipe to any other pipe material we need too.

You might contact Scott Noonan at (419) 678-2596 and see if they can be of any assistance.
