Hi Steve - In one of your pld posts, you referred to the "Steel Plate Fabricators Handbook". I have searched up, down and sideways and have not been able to find this. I looked on the STI-SPFA site in their Publications page and didn't see it there.

Any idea where I can find one?

Thanks Steve!
Pete

I think the correct title might be something like "Useful Information for the Design of Steel Plate Structures" there were two volumes. I hope this helps.

Steve - Thanks for the quick reply. I will search for that title.

The post in which you originally made reference to this particular book was in a response to a question about vacuum design for API 650 tanks.

Thanks!
Pete

API-650 now addresses vacuum conditions for tanks. It's in a new Appendix V, recently published in Addendum 4.

Steve,

Now that API-650 has given us an approved Appendix for the vacuum design of flat bottomed tanks, can you tell us:

1) Should all 620/650 tanks be designed with some type of "minimum vacuum" rating, if, for no other reason, to ensure that a vacuum protection system can be installed ?

2) If the answer to the first question is yes,...... what should that minimum vacuum be ? (I suggest a minimum of -5 IWC, but I am interested in the reasoning of others)

Mr Cronin,
I do not normally apply a vacuum rating to a tank unless so specified by the owner. However I do verify vent sizes for specified flow rates (and thermal venting, if applicable). Any future change of service, such as addition of a vacuum breaker, would be addressed at the appropriate time.
