Hello:

I have an existing steel truss that I am analyzing. The webs and chords comprise of round HSS. The walls of the chord are relatively thin so I would like to check the walls for punching shear. How does one go about doing that? Is there a techincal publication that would be able to assist?

Thanks Again

Chapter K in AISC 360-05 deals with HSS connections. I believe K2 has the information that you're looking for.

There is also an HSS connection manual out there (it's not incorporated into AISC 360-05, but I don't believe the one in the 13th Ed. is as extensive) - I believe is't a black book with gray stripes.

I am not aware of any examples using a round HSS. AISC Design Guide 24 and the black HSS Connection Manual have design examples using square HSS. These might give a conservative estimate.

There must be no knife plate connections if you are concerned with punching shear - just coped and welded pipe to pipe?

I googled "punching shear in circular hollow sections" and got a lot of useful hits, but I think the most comprehensive information available is the CIDECT literature.

There is another publication which I have occasionally mentioned in these forums and that is "theory and design-tubular steel structures" by Troitsky and available from the JF Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation. The 2nd edition that I have will have punching shear formulae for circular and rectangular tubings in Appendix A dealing with the AWS structural Welding Code D1.1 Rev 1-81.
