Punching shear on a pipe cap 1

Any tips on how to calculate the puncing shear on and end pipe cap will be appreciated.

I have a 16" pipe welded to the end cap of a 24" pipe resisting a 15 kip force. Using STAAD FEA I get plate stresses that do not make sense and I like to check them manually.

Assuming no moment, or internal pressure, shear stress is P/(pi*D*wt)
There are such things as reducers.

What would you be doing, if you knew that you could not fail?

What did FEA say?
