Has anyone experience with protective heat shields on flanged joints ? As i understand it these shields are used to protect the flanged joints on hot lines from cooling due to precipitation (rain, snow etc)which can lead to uneven stresses in the joint resulting in leakage. As a rule our flanged joints are not insulated if the line is insulated due to the possibility of leakage going undetected if covered with insulation and cladding.

jonesey,

My experience has been with protective flange "covers" or "guards" which were applied on all piping flanges. ( these are also called "spray shields".... see for an example)

These flange covers were essenially short cyliderical plastic or metal devices that were designed to protect personnel from liquid spray, should there be a gasket failure. The guard would not stop the leak, but it would prevent a spraying condition.....gasket failures would merely drip.

Are these the devices you are talking about ?

It's possible that these spray shields could be used to the same effect that i'm after. i think the type of heat shields that have been used before consist of a thin metal plate type shroud around the flanged joint fixed by picking up from the bolts used in the flanged joint. Thanks for the info.
