Hi,

Quick question,
From NFPA 13 2016 edition, when we protect exposed nonexpanded group A rack storage (figure 17.2.1.4 (j), do we have to balance in-rack sprinklers with ceiling sprinkler system?
Section 17.2.1.5 doesn't say anything about balancing, only section 17.1.5 says that in-rack sprinkler needs to balanced (but that is with solid shelving)

Or, am I missing something?

Thanks,

Rack sprinklers are always balanced with one exception.

I have never seen it but, theoretically anyway, I suppose it is possible to have a totally separate and independent supply for overhead sprinklers and a seperate and totally independent supply for racks.

In 42 years I have never seen this situation.

Other than that you will ALWAYS and forever balance.

Most demanding rack sprinklers might not be at the end of th line so shifting might be called for.
