Over the past few years metal additive manufacturing has come into its own. With industrial and technological giants like GE, Airbus and NASA leveraging the process’ ability to create complex parts, it's more vital than ever that metal AM adopt quality standards. Will adopting a new ASTM standard do the trick?

The quality and material properties of components produced using AM processes would need to be handled similar to the approach used for cast or welded components. Each component would require qualifying a controlled manufacturing process that describes things like machine settings, raw materials, tooling, environmental controls, etc. The ASTM standard would simply provide a guideline for the documentation and testing required to validate/qualify the additive manufacturing process that will be used for a particular component.

I agree with tbuelna. I think it will be very interested to see how the standard addresses certain parameters, or if they do not at all. I'm curious how they find that balance between the standard being loose enough that it's essentially nonrestrictive, and being so specific that it ties hands from standard effectual products/processes.
