How do you turn on promote body in the customer defaults of NX6

Not 100% sure for NX 6, but look in Assemblies -> general -> interpart modeling.

If it isn't there, search for "promote body" (binoculars icon).

When you can't find a command, like you were trying to do, be sure to use the command finder.
Help -> Command Finder
Then in this case you would enter "promote body"
It is also the binoculars on your toolbar
