I have just moved over to solidworks from using Inventor for 5 years. I wish to edit a part in an assembly by transfering the hole pattern in one component to another. In an Inventor assembly I would simply edit the desired part, start a sketch on a surface, hit the project geometry button, and click on the face or feature on another part that was on a parallel plane. The outline of the face or feature would then appear on the new sketch. What is the command named in Solidworks that projects geometry to a sketch?
Thanks

I hope I haven't mixed SW up with ProE here but the command you're looking for I think is 'convert entities'. In the sketch, you'd pick a hole egde for example, then click on the convert entities button and it will project a sketch of that hole onto the surface you are skecthing on.

It should be in the sketch tools toolbar.

Great! Thank you for the help. It works just like project geometry in Inventor.

In Solidworks you can only project a curve from a sketch. ing out Solidworks for the first time. Many common surfacing techniques that have been created over the past 20 years are not possible with just being able to project a curve from a sketch but thats another topic.

I don't have SW installed anyplace but I think the command is 'project curve' and if you turn on your interface options for surface icons and hover over each icon you will locate the tool.
