I am licensed in the state of MI and have worked as a Civil Engineer for 6-7 years, 2 licesed. I would like to perform foundation, truss designs for local builders, but don't know where to begin on the business front. Nothing big at first, but on the side out of the house. Any pointers?

In the mean time, does anyone know of a link to a good indemnification clause that I could have one customer sign for a design I am performing at no cost? I am uninsured and would like to pass the "liability" buck.

If your name is on the plans, then you are liable. No good deed goes unpunished!

Check to make sure it's not ground for dismissal at your current firm (i.e., to moonlight). Bear in mind that you are describing a practice in structural engineering but you are licensed in civil engineering (I know it's the same stamp, but in a dispute, you'd loose). Good luck getting insurance. That said, the best defense is poverty. Now all you have to do is secure a contract without liability AND insurance. Good luck there too!
