hi all,

i am new in studying pressure relief system. i have tried to read API RP 521 and GPSA section 5 "relief system". but it lacks of manual calculation example, so i have confusion to apply the equations in those codes.

1. is there any handbook which provides the example of designing pressure relief system ? or could you please provide me the manual calculation in designing pressure relief system ? (PRV, flare piping system, Flare separator drum and the flare). i cant find it in google

2. what is the software commonly used to design pressure relief system ?

i need your help. thanks in advance :)

API 520 I/II and API 521 offer complete guidance on sizing of relief valves, associated pipework, and flare including the KO drum. See also the links below:

Design of relief network can be evaluated by using Flarenet. The other software, Flaretot, provides additional options to size the flare stack based on radiation and dispersion criteria. You can get a fully functional 30-day trial version at
Once you start with the design come back with more specific questions, if any.
