Hi everyone.
When I supply pWPS to Contractor for review. He write comment in my pWPS that : due to hardness consideration Contractor advise to use an E 8016 - XX electrode instead of E 9016-G. I don't know why. Hereafter is parameter of pWPS:
+Base metal API 5L X65
+Process GTAW+SMAW
+Root: A5.28 ER80S-G
+Hot: A5.28 ER80S-G
+Third: A5.5 E 9016-G
+Cap: A5.5 E 9016-G
Could Someone explain to me why?
Thanks.

For X65 line pipe most use E8016 or E8010 electrodes for fill and cap.

The E9016 is overkill. See metengr.

What am I missing? I thought the suffix letter "G" indicated the filler metal does not comply with standard AWS filler metals such as E8018-A1, E8018-B2, E71T-1C, etc. I thought the suffix letter "G" indicated the deposited weld chemistry is acceptable by mutual agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

Best regards - Al

gtaw,
E9016-G electrodes are common in Japan. They have chemistry just out of and sometimes within the range of electrode class E8018-C3 or other AWS specific classes. Many of the Kobelco "G" rated filler metals similarly mimic AWS Class electrodes; the key to their use is the trade designation, which defines the chemistry.

E8010-G and E9010-G fillers provided for decades by Lincoln for welding of pipelines similarly do not fit standard AWS Classes. Again the trade designation provides the chemistry and mechanical properties.

Thanks -

Best regards - Al
