Preheating of metal scrap.

Hi all,
I'm having a problem in trying to evaluate the heat exchange between a hot stream of fumes flowing a bank of ferrous metal scrap in order to preheat it before an Electric Arc Furnace.
My biggest problem is how to consider the metal scrap (a packed bed?) and therefore how to estimate an overall heat exchange coefficient.

Does anyone have any idea to suggest me?

Is it going to save the company millions or hundreds? What are the consequences of being wrong? It may be that you need to conduct an experiment; it could be physical or computational. There are companies that can evaluate this for you either way.
 
Hi,
Essentially, I need to know the outlet temperature of the fumes knowing inlet temperature and the flow rate.
I need this for the preliminary design of a dedusting plant, it in not required an elevate precision of the result.
 
How often will the scrap preheat system be out of service? The worst-case scenario for inlet temperature is when there is no scrap to absorb energy from the gases. It doesn't seem like mass flow rate is going to change: where else would the fluid stream go?
