Hello everyone, does gouging backweld carbon material with a thickness of 300 mm require preheating?

(is true?)=Preheat is generally not necessary for the gouging process itself, which is primarily used for removing metal, not welding. However, in some cases, like when gouging thick sections of steel or brittle materials, or when the gouged area will be welded over later, preheating might be beneficial to reduce cracking and improve the quality of the weld.

I would require it for backgouging of welds in heavy wall thicknesses prior to making the opposite side weld. The existing weld is under stress even if intermediate stress relief or dehy heat treating has been performed.
