~$prefix 1

I have a ~$prefix before my part number in the feature manager. Can you tell me what the ~$ means?

Solidworks 2006, SP01 (we will be updating service packs this week)

This is my first time using this forum, thanks in advance.

Those are files SolidWorks creates when a document is opened. They contain the name of the person who opened the file. It is used to tell whom has the file open if someone else tries to open it. They should go away when you close the file.

I have re-bboted my sysyem an still have the ~& prefix.
I did have a system crash when I created the part.

You can delete them as long as you don't have the actual file open in SW and not the ~$ file either.

TAK55 ... I have never seen the ~$ prefixed files in the Feature Manager. Do you mean in the "File > Open" window or Windows Explorer or ????

It is a prefix to the actual part number an shows up in the feature manager.

I renamed the part by removing the ~$ prefix. Looks great now.

The ~$ prefix is automatically generated by windows when applications create temp files for autorecovery, etc...

A hiccup in the OS sometimes will leave these hidden files scattered about a PC.

Turn-on the "view hidden files and folders" option and take a browse about the network. Especially where SW assemblies, word docs, etc. are stored. you might be surprised.

I wonder if the "real reason" for the system crash and reboot TAK had referred to forced the assembly to use the left over "no-longer-a-true-temp' file in place of the actual file.

Or I have seen a case where after "an exception and SW must close" type error, SW will prompt you for an auto-recover. maybe something went wrong there. Or the user said yes, save the temp files. Or even a combination of all 3.

I suspect he crashed & then auto-recovered a file or 2... then saved the assemblies with these recovered files. Then the "~$" file became the "good" one. I think a few of my students did this habitually this semester... Now if you set Windows to not show hidden files & folders... you can see where this is going, right?
