Hi!

I wonder how this double tee stem can be repaired.
I have to cut 12 inches at the bearing area.
Also, how can I repair if I need to cut 2 inches?
This is a typical 12ft wide, 60ft long precast double tee for parking structure.
In the past, I reproduced it whenever this problem happened.

Thanks!

So you're removing material that won't be replaced to create a dapped bearing condition? And you'll be doing the fix on the ground rather than in place? Tall order given anchorage demands there and durability concerns. Is external reinforcing acceptable?

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

I guess this is common problem in most precasters.
This repair should sometimes be done in the field and sometime in the job site after erection.
Please consider all scenarios if you can.

It is better to make this repair invisible after it is done.
I guess huge exposed steel plates may be used unless there is other option.
(I heard FRP is very expensive...Wrong? How much does it cost?)

Thanks!

What is the problem? are you trying to replace the bearing area?

Where and what is the reinforcing in the area?

I have never seen a DT turned into a dapped DT in the field. If you can add external reinf use a cazaly hanger. They look neat and its fun to say.

Just to make sure, what's the cost of making a new double tee? In a lot of our precast structures it's just cheaper and faster to recast a piece if it has a major issue rather than repair.
