Post-Installed Anchors

Does anyone know if AASHTO permits the use of post-installed anchors such as epoxy anchors or drilled in type anchors for anchorage to bridge decks?

I posted this question in the bridge section but this forum is much more active.

Guardrail post base plates into the concrete deck.

I don't know of anything in the AASHTO code or any other AASHTO related material.The only problem I see is developing enough concrete break out strength due to vehicular impact. Your plate is going to be enormous, thats if it is even possible to develop the capacity. You're better off having the guardrail attached to a kicker which is braced by the bottom of the beam (if its steel) but sometimes thats not always possible.

AASHTO doesn't cover post installed anchors. The LRFD spec does have a chapter on barrier & railing design.

Does your state DOT have a standard sheet? The Minnesota DOT LRFD Bridge Design Manual - free download - has an example of metal railing with adhesive anchors in Chapter 13.
