Hi all,

I have a very minor job anchoring to concrete (channel letters), so I am banking, as I have n the past) on the IBC provision that provides exception to the special inspection tables for minor work such as this.

However, I recently stumbled across a powerpoint online claiming the 2012 IBC says (somewhere? no reference) that if the ASD FOS is 8 (or greater, I assume), then there is no special inspection required.

Anyone heard of this and can provide a reference?

Thanks!

Never heard of it. Also, post-installed anchors are excluded from the 2012 IBC section 1908 for Anchorage to Concrete - Allowable Stress Design. The strength design section 1909 includes post-installed anchors.

For the 97 UBC (and maybe the 2000 IBC and later?) post-installed anchor's evaluation reports (ICBO ER or ICC ESR) had separate allowable tension values for anchors with special inspection and without special inspection. Without inspection, the allowable tension was 1/2 the allowable for anchors with inspection. The allowable shear was the same with and without inspection.
