I'm working on a home addition where the homeowner wants to turn a portion of the 2nd floor attic (currently a ranch) into a second floor addition. The foyer of the new second floor addition is going to be open to below. The existing 2x8 ceiling joists will be shored where the second floor foyer is going to be and then cut and supported by (2) LVL members. There is very little load here. The foyer is about 5' long and 3' wide so only 25% of this load (15 sf * 40psf *.25 = 150 pounds. I am planning on just having the plans specify "to locate support over a 2x12. I don't see a need to reinforce the first floor joist on which this LVL support will be bearing since the load is relatively low after running calculations. Any thoughts?
Thanks
