How do you insert a non-functional, plain text heading in the task column?

What do you mean? If there are no hours, duration, or resources, why isn't it non-functional?

IRstuff: The minute I enter any text in the task column, MSProject includes duration, start and finish dates thus considering it a task. I just want to have a plain text heading with no dates.

Well, then the answer is no

Well then that's dissappointing because headings are really handy - they make it easier to identify blocks of tasks. Maybe someone will find a way to do it.

That's what summary task structures are for

Oh good! Now I'll have to see if summary task structures does what I want. Thanks.

Yes, you may create your own headings in a task column. Each 'field' has a 'title'. When you insert a column (or edit a column) you may add or edit the column's "title". The "title" is what appears in the heading of the column.

Hope this helps you!
