Pipespec. min. temp -50 deg.C 1

We have a pipespec. 1.4571 (316Ti) without a temp. range.
Is it possible to start the spec.with a min. temp of -50 deg C?

Whats your design Code? Thats where it begins ...

If its B31.3, 316Ti is a non-listed material. You need to use ASME B31.3 323.1.2
Do you need to follow the PED 97/23/EC? Then keep in mind the requirement on notch toughness as per Annex I, "Essential Safety Requirements", para 7.5.

As 316Ti is close to 321 (because of Ti) and 316 (because of higher Cr, Ni, Mo ranges compared to 304), I believe justifying it's use under B31.3 is not that difficult.
However, for low temp applications, I would rather select 304L (or 316L) as they have better properties (lower C-range)

if your using EN 13480 .. good luck ... I dont even want to try and check with that (&^%&*) Code.
 
We can do the design acc. EN13480 or B31.3, but what we want is to use our mat'l. for purposes of -30 deg.C.
 
If the material is specified in a Harmonized Standard, and there is a reference to the notch toughness of 27J at -50ºC, it is ok for PED and EN 13480. I am not sure the tables in EN 13480-2 are usefull, since you are not using steel.

 
Maybe someone has an existing spec. 316Ti from another company?
 
Oeps, misread the material.

EN 13480-2 B.2.2.5 Lowest minimum metal temperatures for austenitic stainless steels
X6CrNiMoTi 17-12-2 1.4571 -196ºC.

If everything within this pipe spec is of this material, it can be used for -50ºC without a problem since this material has no transition temperature. The PED Guideline 7/17 also mentions that most Austenitic stainless steels do not have to be notch tested.

You have a pipe spec without pressure temperature limits specified??? All I can say is it is a poor spec without the limits to which it is applicable. Employ someone who knows how to write pipe specs next time.
 
DSB, You never worked for a very small company ?
Hire expensive Eng.firms with endlessly questions and bills?
It's not a site with high temp or press.
