Pipe Rack Design Book

I am trying to layout a pipe rack and having some problems with reccomended space between courses on the rack. I have found information about recommended spacing horizontally between pipes but nothing on the vertical spacing. Anyone have a book or article about pipe rack design? All of my reference books are silent on pipe racks.

The old adage was "change of direction, change of elevation". Hence adopting this as a philosophy if there are to be branches now or in the future from the headers then the spacing can be determined based upon the header size.

If using conventional piping then allow for two 1.5D radius elbows to get the change of direction and add space for the steel truss of beam. Add a little for clearance and you will be fine.

I have found very few recent design guides regarding this particular point. And, it is an iportant detail that strongly affects the cost of the rack. Most references I have found regarding pipe rack design are magazine articles 20-30 years old.

My suggestion is to go ~ 3 x diameter of the largest pipe on the rack between levels --- with a minimum of four feet between levels.

Most racks I have encountered have between 3'-6" and 5'-0" between levels

Measurement, of course should be TOS to TOS
