We are rerouting a storm line. In doing so we are removing a pipe flowing north out of a manhole and installing a pipe flowing east out of a manhole. How would a contractor demo the pipe out to the north? Would it just be a simple removal of the pipe and grouting of the pipe opening in the manhole?

It depends on the scope of your project.

Smaller pipes are typically abandoned in place with the pipe ends plug with concrete. Larger pipes and pipes in areas subject to loads are filled with flowable concrete.

Smaller manhole openings are repaired with concrete. Larger openings may require some reinforcing wire. The existing condition of the manhole may also impact the repairs.

I have spec'd out removal of all but the last 2+/- feet of pipe to provide ample room to plug the end. For RCP, I have called out for it to be saw-cut. We use a standard plug consisting of brick & mortor for Diameters < 36" and a Manhole reconstruct for pipes larger than 36".
