Pipe Column Base Plate

On tall pipe supports we typically use pipe columns with solid baseplate and grout. To eliminate the chance of any future corrosion the client wants us to use this detail (“stolen” from DOT) with open base plate, leveling nuts and no grout. What do you typically use?

These can work as long as the bolts and base plate are designed for it. If your loads are large it could get tough.

When we were on the slow side a number of years ago, we took a job investigating all the light poles owned by a large shopping mall owner - 12 properties and probably 1500+ light poles. The poles with the most issues had grouted base plates. The poles that did not have the grout were generally in better shape, with less corrosion issues - A weep hole in the base plate (typical for electrical anyway) improved it even more. The concrete bases were a different issues, and their condition was fairly uniform - mostly driven by the salt used around them than the detail of the light pole base above.
